Is it just me, or are cute succulent gardens all over Pinterest right now?
Succulents have become super popular. Not only are they cute, but they also fit in with almost any decor style.
I have to admit, I’m now a total succulent fan! And even though they are trendy, I can’t get enough. I love the tiny details in each unique plant. There’s just something about them that is really cute!
After seeing all those little gardens on Pinterest, I decided I had to have one in my home. And, because I’m all about DIY, I decided to make my own. After all, a DIY version is so much better than a pre-made store bought one!

This little garden project was super easy to put together. You only need a few supplies to make it. Tiny succulent gardens are a perfect way to brings some of the outdoors inside.
How to Plant a Succulent Garden
Materials:
- A variety of succulent plants
- A planter or container for your garden (this one is almost identical mine)
- Potting soil
- Small stones or gravel
- Screen material (optional)
First, you will need to find some succulents for your garden. You can find succulents at most home improvement or gardening stores, but I found mine at IKEA.
But, if you don’t even want to leave your home, you can also find succulents on Amazon! How awesome is that?
Next, you will need some sort of container for your garden. I decided to use a shorter container that I already had in our home. The clean, white design of the container was exactly what I was looking for to create my modern succulent garden. You can find a similar one here.
After I had all of my supplies, I decided to create a layout for my garden. I grouped all of the succulents together and played around with the arrangement until I had something that looked nice.
Once the layout was ready, it was time to prep my container. In order to let the water flow properly through the soil, you will want to have a layer of stones or gravel at the bottom of your container.
I used a small piece of screen material to block the large holes at the bottom of my container. You may or may not need this depending on the type of container that you choose and the size of your gravel.
Then, I created a layer of gravel along the bottom of my container. I made sure to cover the entire bottom with gravel so that the soil could sit on top of that layer.
Next, I added a layer of potting soil to the container until it was about 1/4 of the way full.
Once I had that initial layer of soil in the container, it was time to add the succulent plants. Paying attention to the layout that I created for the garden, I removed each plant from its container. (This is when Ben helped me!)
Then, I placed the plants one by one into the garden container. After each plant was added, I layered in more of the potting soil to fill in the gaps between the container walls and other plants.
As the container started to fill up with plants, I ended up splitting one of the succulent plants in half. Each half of that plant was used to fill in some of the gap spaces in the container.
Once all of the succulents were in their final locations, I filled in everything with more soil until the surface of the garden was nice and even.
Then, I gave my new succulent garden some water and it was done!
This was such an easy project to make. It didn’t take me long at all and I think it turned out really cute!
Taking Care of Succulents
I’m not a succulent expert, but I have learned a few tips about taking the best care of them. Here are some important things to remember to keep your succulents healthy and pretty!
- Keep succulents in an area where they will get 1/2 day to 1 full day of sunlight.
- Water your succulents at least once a week, but be sure not to over water them. Succulents don’t like to be sitting in lots of water. That’s why the drainage in your garden is so important.
- As a general rule, give your succulents some water when the soil is starting to feel dry.

I’m really happy with my DIY version of a succulent garden. I think that it’s going to look great in my home. This project was so easy to make and it can definitely be done in an afternoon.

Your succulent garden is beautiful. I never thought of getting succulents at Ikea. I will have to look next time I go. I love succulents, mostly because they survive when I inevitably forget to water them.
Thanks! Yes Ikea normally has then with all the other garden area things. Also – yes I have a brown thumb with my plants 🙂
I love succulents, and I’m planning on buying more, so these are great tips! Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday! 🙂
This is an awesome tutorial!! I would love to share it on my Facebook page tomorrow.
Thanks so much Brooke! I would love it if you would share on your Facebook page!

Ohhh, I love these! It looks easy enough for me and my brown thumb (is that a thing?) to handle ????
Haha Sam I totally understand the “brown thumb” – my husband is much better at keeping plants watered than I am in this house

I keep killing my herb plants, so maybe succulents would be better for me. Thanks for the tutorial! I want to try planting my own succulent garden soon.
Glad you enjoyed the post Jenna! 🙂

I would recommend a potting mix without moisture control, or one specifically for cactus & succulents. Some of the nurseries in our area recommend to water once a week, even when outside in the heat. Also don’t forget to feed them.
Thanks for the advice Alma.

I just started to plant my first succulent garden as well and read in many post that we should water succulents very lightly (usually with the help of a syringe). I’m getting a bit confused when I see that you put the whole garden in the sink and water the whole garden. So basically we should “emerge” the whole garden with water or really water them very lightly to the roots accordingly? Thanks!
Hi Sandy! I just re-read that part and what I meant to say was I put the garden in the sink so I could water it. I didn’t actually submerge it in water, I was just using the sink as a drain. I went back and fixed that section of the post. With that said I did use the spout to water the garden, but not drown it. That’s good to know that maybe I should be giving it a little bit less water – or watering more sparingly. Sorry for the confusion. Hope your garden turns out well!

I always wanted to plant something but I think I am not capable of this task, I am too irresponsible because these plants have to be carried.
I love succulent garden and that is the very site I was looking for some time to do it right.
Hello, Christene. I just want to say thank you for this informative and detailed guide. I learned many tips that I can use for succulent plants. I realized that succulents are indeed special plants that need special materials for them to grow healthily. Cheers!
