Start by going through each room and sorting your belongings. Keep only what you need and love, and let go of the rest.
Donate, sell, or store away items that aren’t frequently used. This not only creates more physical space but also makes your home feel more organized and peaceful.
Tip: Adopt the “one in, one out” rule to keep clutter at bay: for every new item you bring in, get rid of one old item.
I remember when I was pregnant with our second baby, our small townhouse started to feel incredibly cramped. What worked before suddenly wasn’t working anymore.
I spent a weekend ruthlessly decluttering each room, and it was like a breath of fresh air. Suddenly, our home felt more open and peaceful, and I could finally relax.

Use Multi-Functional Furniture
Invest in furniture that serves multiple purposes. This is a great way to get more bang for your buck when buying furniture pieces that you already need.
For example, a sofa bed in the guest room or a coffee table with storage can save space and reduce the need for extra pieces of furniture.
Tip: Look for furniture with built-in storage, like ottomans, benches, or beds with drawers underneath.
Storage Ottoman
This storage ottoman can store things like blankets or toys. But it also acts as extra seating.
Storage Bench
This beautiful woven bench would look great at the foot of a bed. The bonus is that it has storage space inside!
Optimize Your Storage
Effective storage solutions can make a huge difference in how spacious your home feels.

Light and Bright Colors
Lighter colors reflect more light, making a room feel larger and more open.
Opt for whites, light grays, or pastels on your walls, ceilings, and furniture. Neutral colors can create the illusion of space in a smaller home.
Dark colors, on the other hand, can make spaces feel more confined.
Tip: Add more colors through accessories like throw pillows, rugs, or artwork to keep the space from feeling too sterile. Choose a color palette that will add some interest to your space.
Our living room felt so much larger after we painted the walls a light gray. This bright color completely transformed the room without much effort or expense.

Mirrors and Reflective Surfaces
Use mirrors in smaller rooms to help give the feeling of more square footage. Mirrors can create the illusion of more space by reflecting light and making a room feel brighter.
Strategically place mirrors opposite windows or near light sources to maximize their effect.
I hung a large mirror opposite our owner’s bedroom window, and it instantly made the room feel twice as big. It’s one of my favorite tricks for small spaces.
Furniture Arrangement
The way you arrange your furniture can significantly impact how spacious your home feels.
Avoid blocking windows and doorways to maintain the flow of natural light and movement.
Arrange furniture to create clear pathways and open up floor space. This is one of the best ways to create the feeling of more space.
Tip: Floating furniture (placing pieces away from walls) can sometimes make a room feel larger by creating a sense of depth.
If you haven’t ever moved your furniture around, try something new in your home. Take a little bit of time and try re-arranging. See how it makes your home feel.

Streamline Decor
Too many decor items can make a space feel cluttered and small.
Choose a few larger pieces and keep surfaces relatively clear. A statement piece looks much better than a bunch of smaller items.
This minimalist approach helps create a clean and airy feel.
Tip: Group smaller decor items together on a tray to create a cohesive look and reduce visual clutter.
I love decorating, but I’ve learned that less is often more. By simplifying our decor and grouping smaller items together, our home feels more calm and decluttered.

Maximize Natural Light
Natural light can make any space feel larger and more inviting.
Keep windows clean and use sheer or light-filtering window treatments to allow maximum light to enter.
Open Shelving
Open shelving can make a room feel more open compared to bulky cabinets.
Use open shelves in kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms, or bathrooms to display attractive items while keeping the space feeling light and airy.
Tip: Keep open shelves tidy and well-organized to avoid a cluttered look. Use baskets or bins for smaller items.
We replaced a bookshelf in our dining room with open shelving, and it completely changed the feel of the space. You an get a similar effect with pre-made floating shelves.
It forced us to stay organized and made our small dining room look much bigger.
