Every year we go out and cut down a fresh tree for the Christmas season. I love having a fresh Christmas tree in our home because it’s not only beautiful, but it also smells amazing!
On our drive home from the tree farm this year, my husband said something that really made me laugh. He commented, “Isn’t it a weird tradition that every year we go out into a field, hunt down a tree, chop it down, drag it into our home, and then put lights on it?”
We both laughed at how ridiculous that sounded, but it’s completely true. Every year we are basically bringing a GIANT plant into our home. A plant that just a few hours ago was living happily in a field drinking up all the water it needed. Now it’s standing in our home!
Just like any other plant, a Christmas tree needs water. And since it’s just a really big plant (tree), it needs a LOT of water!
How to Keep a Christmas Tree Watered {with Evergreen Elf}
A big thank you to Evergreen Elf for sponsoring this post. All opinions of their amazing Christmas tree water monitor are 100% my own. For more information, see my disclosures here.
In order to keep a fresh tree alive in your home all Christmas season, you have to take care of it. That means giving it the right amount of water and making sure that it doesn’t get dry.
And if you know me, you’re aware that I’m terrible with plants! Horrible actually. I just always forget to water them and I can’t keep anything alive. That’s why I’m always decorating with faux greenery and plants because I don’t have to worry about them.
The only plant that I’ve had any luck with is my Fiddle Leaf Fig tree — affectionately called “Figgy” because he only requires water every few weeks. And that’s about the time when I actually remember that I need to water him.
Did I mention I’m terrible at keeping plants alive? LOL
But a Christmas tree can’t go weeks without watering. Since it’s been freshly cut, it starts drawing in tons of water right away.
If you let it go without water for too long, the tree will start to dry out. And, a dry tree is extremely susceptible to catching fire.
Have you ever googled Christmas tree fire? It’s terrifying!!!
That’s why it’s so important to keep a fresh Christmas tree watered and healthy.
But during the craziness of the holiday season, watering the tree is probably not at the top of your list. There are so many things to do and remember this time of year that it’s easy to forget that your tree is guzzling up water and probably needs more!
For me, watering the Christmas tree is something that I honestly never remember to do. I’ll think to myself “did we water it yesterday, or maybe that was 2 days ago?” At the point, the tree is already desperate for more water!
Not only is this bad for the tree because it will die faster, but it’s really dangerous for our home. I knew I had to do something this year to help me remember to keep the tree watered.
That’s when I found Evergreen Elf!
Isn’t he cute!?
Evergreen Elf is a Christmas tree water level monitor. He sits on the edge of the tree stand all season long and continuously checks the tree’s water level to make sure we’re keeping it properly watered.
From the front, Evergreen Elf looks like a cute Christmas decoration. But when you turn him to the side, you can see that has a probe attached to him.
The probe extends down into the water reservoir of the tree stand and can sense when the water level is low.
If the water level is too low, Evergreen Elf will alert you by saying “Out of Water!” He also has a Christmas tree indicator light that will flash red.
Once you refill the water in the stand, the indicator light changes to flash green, showing you that there’s enough water.
I put together a really short video to show you exactly how he works. In the video, I did a test of Evergreen Elf with 2 water glasses. One had some water in it and the other was empty.

Evergreen Elf is designed to be both a visual and audio alert system for when your tree is low on water. That means you can glance under the tree at Evergreen Elf and see if your water level is good without having to climb under the tree, push aside the branches, and stick your hand into the stand. Instead, you can just check to make sure Evergreen Elf is flashing green.
And if the water is low, Evergreen Elf will switch to showing a red flashing light. He will also alert you by saying “Out of Water” every hour.
I love having the Evergreen Elf for our tree! It gives me the peace of mind knowing that I don’t have to constantly be worried about our Christmas tree.
When I first put him on our tree stand, I left for a few hours to go clean up our house. Later when I was working on my blog in the living room, he actually alerted me that the tree was low on water. I was just sitting there at my computer and I heard “Out of Water! Out of Water!” coming from under our tree.
And believe me, I would have never thought at that moment that I needed to water the tree. I was totally focused on something else and probably would have forgotten for at least another day. By that time, the tree would have been very dehydrated.
