I’ve been working my way through out home sharing my plans for each space. My goal from the beginning has been to transform our cookie-cutter house into a home that fits our style and feels more like ours! The last plans post that I shared was my plans for the living room. Today I’m going to share with you my plans for the Master Bedroom!
This is our master bedroom today.
The master bedroom is a room that we had originally planned to work on first. We wanted to get it all setup and decorated so that it would feel like a relaxing and cozy space. Unfortunately, that didn’t really happen and instead, we just put in the bedroom furniture that we had from our apartment and moved onto other projects.
We focused a lot of our time on the main living spaces in the house because that’s where we would be spending a lot of time and also where we would be entertaining guests. We’ve made a lot of progress in those areas, but the master bedroom has kind of been neglected.
We always thought that since we don’t really spend that much time in there, and most who come to our home don’t even see our bedroom, that it didn’t need to be a priority at first. Because of that mentality, we kept pushing off working on our master bedroom.
That meant living with a master bedroom that felt really unfinished. Our master bedroom currently isn’t the relaxing space that we imagined, so it’s time to get started making plans.
The very first thing that we did in the master bedroom, right after we moved in, was install light blocking cordless shades. We chose simple white shades that have a really small profile when they are collapsed.
The next thing that we did in the master bedroom was paint the walls and the ceiling. We painted the walls a muted purple gray and the ceilings are white (no more yellow).
And, that’s all we have done in the space. Like I said, not very much has been done in here, but now it’s time for the list!
I love lists because they help to keep me on track and to see the progress that I’ve made. So, for each of my room plans, I’m going to include a list. I’m hoping this will help keep me accountable and working towards making our house into the home I’ve been dreaming of.
Here are some of my plans for the master bedroom room…
The Master Bedroom List
Done:
- Installed cordless light blocking shades
- Painted Walls and Ceiling
To-Do:
- Add Trim to Windows
Just like in the other rooms, I’d like to add craftsman style trim to the window in this room.
- Install Curtains
To make this room feel cozy, I want to add simple white curtains to all the windows.
- Accent Wall Board and Batten
I’m obsessed with board and batten and love the character it adds to rooms. I want to add board and batten to the entire wall that the bed is against to create a focal accent wall. I think the white will look amazing against the darker walls of the rest of the room.

- New Bed, Mattress, and Bedding
Our bed needs an overhaul! I’d love to get a new upholstered bed for our room, and it would be so nice to have a king bed. We need a new mattress anyway, so if we were going to invest in a new bed and mattress, we might as well go big and get the king size. I also would really like to have new, cozy bedding. Our bedding is getting old and worn out. Actually, some of the buttons on our duvet cover are starting to fall off ????. We have always gone the cheap route when investing in new linens, and I’m ready for a change. It would be nice to have a high-quality bedding set that would make the room feel really luxurious.

- New Nightstands
Our nightstands are way too small for this space. We bought them for our apartment since we had a much smaller room at that point and larger nightstands wouldn’t fit. I’d like to get something a little wider with more storage options.
- New Lamps
The lamps in these photos have actually been moved to our living room for now, so we don’t even have lamps in the master bedroom. I am leaning toward task lamps either on a nightstand or build into the accent wall in either a black or gold finish.

Add Overhead Light
There is a rough-in for a light in the tray ceiling of our master, but I haven’t found the right light for the space yet. I think I want to add something a little more modern to this space.

- Refinish Dressers
Our storage dresser is just two IKEA dressers next to each other. They are brown, so I would really like to refinish them with some Fusion Mineral Paint. Adding some hardware will also help to make these dressers look more updated.
- Additional Seating
I would like to get some sort of ottoman for the foot of the bed, but I’m not sure what kind just yet. Also, we have some more room in our master bedroom, so it might be nice to have a small seating area with a chair, small table and a lamp for reading.

- Add Decorative Accents
That’s the master bedroom list! To make sure I’m staying on track, I’ll be adding a link to this post on my Home Tour page under the Master Bedroom section. As we do projects in the master bedroom, I’ll be updating this list and checking things off as we go…and maybe adding some things too 🙂 .

I love the muted grey walls! It will really make a wall board stand out. And yeah, go for a king size! My husband and I slept on a queen for 10 years and didn’t realize what we were missing out on until we made an upgrade!
I like your plans a lot!I’ve always done a blue theme in my room as well. Great post!
